Spirit Of Wood |
Programme notes:
From an initial budding pitch b, the music grows in concentric circles of rhythmic palindromes to form a texture very much like the complex tissue of plant xylem. A single melodic element focuses on pitches a, c and e, the acronym for the Asian Civilisations Museum, which commissioned this piece for a special exhibition on Malay wood carving, entitled Spirit of Wood. The piece concludes with a graceful, peaceful blossoming of the arborescent circles of the xylem. The first performance took place in 2003 in the River Room of the Asian Civilisation Museum.
Quote
Despite the variation in texture, a sense of stillness is created.
