This haunting work is an autobiographical drama with four characters, the composer, his lady muse, her husband and her child. Each character is cryptographically represented by a number of musical notes. The formal structure is a prelude followed by four scenes and a final aria. Extracts from poems by Flemish poet Hugo Claus and French poet Charles Baudelaire are intertwined.
